Summer is winding down and I’ll soon be trading beach reads for Fall thrillers and my absolute favorite books – cute, holiday rom-coms!
Confession…I didn’t make it through the stack of books I planned to read this summer because well… I bought other books that I wanted to read more. That’s the story of my life! I just keep adding to my TBR pile.
Regardless, I still read a lot of great books this summer. Here’s a recap of the six books I finished in August.
Summer Hours by Amy Mason Doan
Becc is still trying to forgive herself for the mistakes she made in college. Ten years later, she finds herself on a road trip with a man from her past, hoping she can repair the friendships that were ruined by the secrets she hid. Set in the 90’s and 2008, this is a great book about friendship, love, coming of age, a secret relationship and the consequences that follow.
Nora Goes Off Script by Annabel Monaghan
Nora writes a screenplay about her failed marriage. When Leo shows up to play her ex-husband in the movie, he comes across annoying (but also extremely handsome). When the movie crew leaves, Nora finds Leo on her front porch. He wants to stay at her house for seven days. He wants to experience “normal” life. Seven days away from Hollywood. Seven days to upend Nora’s very scheduled, very normal world. I absolutely loved this book!
The Lifeguards by Amanda Eyre Ward
Three teenage boys discover the body of a young woman. Their mothers – best friends – will do anything to protect their sons when they become murder suspects. How far will they go? How quickly will their friendships unravel? How long can they hide their secrets?
My only complaint about the book was that there were so many characters it was hard to keep the details straight. Also, it ended leaving a lot of questions unanswered.
Things We Do In The Dark by Jennifer Hillier
If you’re looking for a twisty thriller, this book is for you! I’ll be honest, it started a little slow for me, but then the plot thickened and I was hooked. When Paris is accused of murdering her famous, wealthy and much older husband, the past she’s tried so hard to escape comes back to haunt her. Can she keep her secrets buried?
The Layover by Lacie Waldon
Ava is about to board what she thinks will be her last flight as a flight attendant. She’s just gotten engaged and it’s time for her to settle down; at least that’s what she’s telling herself. On her last flight, Ava is stuck working with Jack Stone – a guy she detests. Canceled flights leave them stuck in Belize, where Ava begins to realize that she’s not ready to give up her life of flying and adventure.
This book was just okay for me. I had a really hard time getting into it. It didn’t start to get good until about half-way through. By then I was too far into the story to want to quit it, so I just kept reading.
Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt
I read this book to Jackson. It’s about a girl named Ally and she has Dyslexia. Jackson and I had some great conversations about Dyslexia, and how, like Ally, he learns differently than most kids.
