It’s a new year and there are so many books waiting to be read!
Most of my books are currently packed in boxes, stacked in my garage, because we’re preparing to move to Michigan.
Between my books, John’s books and Jackson’s books, we’ve got boxes and boxes of books!
I really cannot buy anymore until after we move.
I’ll be putting my Kindle Paperwhite to good use over the next few months.
Here’s a recap of the five books I read this month.
Going There by Katie Couric
Well, she definitely went there!
I wanted to read this book because when I was going to journalism school, Couric was kind of a big deal. I even stood outside the TODAY Show in NYC when she was the host. Somewhere my mom has the VHS tape of me and my friend waving like lunatics to viewers all across America.
Thirty pages in and the journalist in me was hooked – I loved her descriptions of the news rooms and how she got her start, because I could relate so much to the magic of a newsroom and being a young reporter trying to make my mark. But about half-way through the book I got a little bored. I didn’t devour this book like I thought I would. Honestly, I just have a lot of mixed feelings about Couric after reading her memoir.
My heart went out to her when she wrote about losing her husband. Reading her take on the Matt Lauer scandal definitely kept my attention. But I don’t know, I didn’t finish the book loving Katie. I know I’ve been out of the journalism world for a long time, but so many of her decisions as a journalist seemed really questionable.
Eight Perfect Hours by Lia Louis
I finally finished this book on our long drive to Michigan. Honestly, I had a hard time getting into it. It was a slow start, but I’m glad I stuck it out. Noelle Butterby finds herself stranded on a snowy motorway with Sam Attwood, a complete (but handsome) stranger. Noelle’s life is kind-of a mess – she’s still grieving the death of her best friend, was dumped by her boyfriend of many years and feels completely responsible for her mom who’s dealing with mental health issues. But in the car with Sam that night, Noelle feels seen. It’s eight hours of perfection. When they part ways the next morning, Noelle is sure she will never see Sam again, but fate has a different plan.
Drive by Kate Stewart
Full disclosure…this book is Rated R! Lots of language and sexual content, but it completely sucked me in! I was desperate to know who’s wedding had completely rocked Stella’s world. After finding out from a friend that someone from her past has gotten married, Stella is left shocked; flooded with memories from her past. She’s so rattled, she misses her flight home. Stella decides to rent a car and drive; listening to a playlist from her past to help her work through her crazy emotions.
The Simple Wild by K.A. Tucker
Several people recommended this book, which is the first in a four-book series. I loved it! I read it in two days.
When Calla was two-years-old her mom took her away from Alaska and her father. Twenty-four years later she’s returned in hopes of reconnecting with her dad, who’s been diagnosed with cancer. Calla is used to the buzz of city life and updating her Instagram account. The materialistic city-girl meets her match when she comes face-to-face with Jonah, a pilot who works for her father. He’s convinced she can’t make it in Alaska, but she’s prepared to prove him wrong. She’s determined to make it in the slow-paced, mosquito infested wilderness her father adores.
Wild at Heart by K.A. Tucker
This month I also finished book two of the Simple Wild Series. I don’t want to give anything away about book two for those who haven’t read book one, but if you’re looking for a great rom-com series, I highly recommend this one! Book two is a continuation of Calla’s Alaskan adventures.
Forever Wild by K.A. Tucker
The third book in the series is actually a novella, and I finished it, too!
