I look forward to Fridays. Not because it’s the last day of the week or because we take Friday off from school. I look forward to Fridays because we don’t have a single place we have to be. Every other morning we have to hustle to a therapy appointment.
On Fridays we can start slow.
Last Friday we cuddled up in the oversized chair by the fireplace. We read books together and stayed in our pajamas for a good portion of the day. We decided to stay snuggled up for our spelling test, because when you homeschool you don’t have to write the words out. You can simple spell them out loud for mom.
Homeschool didn’t feel stressful last Friday. It felt peaceful and slow. There were plenty of opportunities to connect.
That’s what I want our homeschool to be.
We listened to an audio book about Snowflake Bentley, while Jackson painted a snow storm.
Snowflake Bentley was a man who loved snow. It was his absolute favorite thing. He decided he wanted to take photos of the snow to capture each and every unique design. He spent his entire life devoted to learning how to take photographs of snowflakes. He walked through blizzards and endured freezing temperatures to pursue his passion.
There was a line in the book that really stood out to me. I had to hurry and scribble it down so I wouldn’t forget it.
Snowflake Bentley followed his passion, he never gave up!
Those nine words are my exact hope for Jackson.
If he learns anything from homeschool, I pray that he learns what he’s passionate about.
Reading may always be a struggle.
Math may be the last thing he wants to do.
But if he finds his passion and follows it with all his might, then I will have succeeded as his teacher.
