It’s Friday and we made it through the week! Whew!!!! Anyone else feeling super thankful for the weekend?
Lately, the days have been a little more challenging as we work to find the perfect ADHD mediciation for my kiddo. His hyperactivity has been off the charts and his focus – well, let’s just say homeschool has been interesting!
As we face these challenges head on, I thought it would be a good idea to blog about some of my favorite ADHD tools. I’m sure there are other mamas out there who might benefit from a few of these. I hope they help to educate you more about ADHD, while helping to keep you sane.
Let the weekend begin!
Books about Feelings
I’ve blogged about these books before, but they are worth mentioning again. Kids with ADHD have a super hard time regulating their emotions, so we try and read books that help put words to BIG feelings. I devoted an entire blog post to these books. You can read about them here.
Mindful Parenting for ADHD
I’m really enjoying this book! It’s opening my eyes to the many layers of ADHD and how it effects everything my kiddo does. I blogged earlier this week about some of the things I’m learning from the book. You can read that here.
One of the best quotes from the books says: Addressing ADHD requires perseverance, flexibility, responsiveness, and an ability to find moments of joy and success during challenging times.
Mattress Jumping
On the days when Jackson’s hyperactivity is off the charts, we pull his mattress off his bed and let him jump to his heart’s content. We really need to invest in a trampoline, but the mattress works well for now! So. Much. Energy.
Trampoline Park
Speaking of jumping, I took Jackson to the local trampoline park last week and he LOVED it! We went during the week when everyone else was in school and had the place to ourselves. He jumped for an hour and left sweaty and happy! I later discovered they offer special hours on Saturday mornings for kids with special needs! Guess where we’ll be tomorrow morning?
This Visual Schedule
I wanted a fun visual schedule to implement at home as we approach a new school year. Jackson does much better when he has visual cues. It helps him to know what to expect, transition easier and stay on task.
I found this shop on Etsy and fell in love with her schedules. She will even personalize routine cards, which was exactly what I needed since we have speech therapy and a few other activities we do on a regular basis.
Mindfulness Books
I came across these books on Amazon one night when I couldn’t sleep and decided to order them. I’m so glad I did. They are the perfect books for my kid with BIG emotions! We opened the first book and it immediately addressed some of Jackson’s biggest challenges – going to the dentist and getting a hair cut! Definitely recommend adding these to your at-home library!
Lots of Outdoor Play
Now that the temperatures aren’t brutal, I’m trying to make outdoor play more of a priority. That’s been hard to do this summer with temperatures topping 100 each day. This week we had a reprieve from the heat and enjoyed some great outdoor time. There were scooter rides, water gun fights, a trip to the splash pad and a messy, muddy adventure.
I’ll do just about anything to decrease the amount of time his face is glued to a screen!
A Dog
One of the best things we’ve done is get Jackson a dog! Our goldendoodle, Jellybean, is his best buddy! She’s a constant companion who is always happy to see him. She wrestles with him, licks his face off and provides a lot of love.
