This month I read four books; two of which I. Could. Not. Put. Down!!
I’m pretty sure The People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry will make my top three reads of 2021.
I was a little hesitant about reading it because I didn’t exactly love her first book; but after a few friends recommended it I decided to go for it. I absolutely loved this book – so much better (and different) than her first book. I adored Poppy and Alex and their quirky personalities. These two are complete opposites, but their friendship is the sweetest. I lost count of how many times I laughed out loud during this book. I don’t know the last time a book made me do that.
This book is a must-read if you’re looking for something to devour this summer while you’re sitting my the pool! Stick it in your beach bag; you won’t be disappointed.
The Good Sister by Sally Hepworth was my May read for my online book club and it sucked me in immediately.
This is one of those books that I hesitate to say too much about, because there are so many twists and turns and I don’t want to ruin it for anyone who hasn’t read it.
Fern and Rose are twin sisters. Fern lives a very structured life. She avoids large crowds, bright lights and wears headphones to block out loud noises. Rose does everything she can to protect Fern. She keeps her life as predicitable as possible. When Rose discovers she can’t have a baby, Fern decides she can have a baby for her – as a way to pay her sister back for taking care of her throughout the years. Fern’s plan will require her to face her fears and will expose long hidden secrets.
As the mother of a child with Sensory Processing Disorder, I was blown away by Hepworth’s writing. She does an amazing job describing what it’s like living with sensory issues. I found myself smiling as I read about some of Fern’s quirks and aching when I read about others because I could relate to them on such a personal level.
The other two books I read this month were…
Shipped by Angie Hockman
For some reason it took me a little bit to get into this book, but once I did I enjoyed it.
Henley is not a fan of her coworker Graeme after he takes credit for a social media project that was her idea. She is shocked to learn they are both in the running for the promotion she’s had her heart set on. Not only is he her competition, she has to spend a week with him on a cruise ship.
This is a fun, cute read for summertime.
Good Company by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney
I decided to read this book after Elin Hilderbrand recommended it on Instagram and because it was one of Jenna Bush Hagar’s picks. Honestly, I didn’t love it or hate it. It was just sort of okay.
The book is about two couple friends – Margot and David and Julian and Flora – and the ups and downs of their friendship, marriages and careers through the years. Things begin to unravel when Flora finds Julian’s wedding ring hidden in the garage – the wedding ring she thought he’d lost during a summer vacation more than a decade ago. Margot’s not only been keeping a secret from her best friend Flora, but her television career is coming to an end. Can the couples survive the secrets that threaten to tear them apart?
