I read six books this month – some fun and easy chick lit and a few thriller/who did it type books. It was a great mixture of genres. I honestly enjoyed every book I read.
The Downstairs Neighbor by Helen Cooper
The book is about a teenage girl who disappears from an apartment building. Three families live in the house and they each have secrets that could be connected to Freya’s disappearance. I enjoyed this mystery with all its twists and turns. This is the author’s debut novel and I honestly couldn’t put it down.
I used to read a lot of books similar to this and I’m not sure why I stopped. I plan to add more of this genre to my reading. This was the first book I had to read for the online bookclub I joined. I had a great time discussing it with my friend, Kenna. She always recommends great books. You can see some of her recommendations here.
The 40-Day Social Media Fast by Wendy Speake
In March I felt the tug to delete social media from my phone. I decided to read this book while I took a break from the online world. I didn’t read this book in one sitting, I’m using it more like a daily devotion. If you’re needing a break from the noisy online world, I definitely recommend this book.
The Family Next Door by Sally Hepworth
Essie is a mom with a secret that haunts her. Ange is struggling to keep up with her perfect social media image, while her husband hides secrets of his own. Fran spends all her free time running – running from her mistakes and the truth. Isabelle moves into the neighborhood and becomes fascinated with Essie and her family. Secrets run deep on Pleasant Court and they’re about to be exposed.
This was my first time to read a book by Hepworth and I loved it! I plan to read her novel The Good Sister next month.
The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman
Okay, I absolutely loved this quirky book! Maybe because the main character, Nina, is a little bit like me – a book lover, introverted, anxious and a lover of office supplies. Ha! She likes to make lists just to mark things off once they are complete. I might do that, too.
Nina works in a bookstore and likes spending her time alone with a good book. She isn’t quiet sure how to feel when she discovers her biological father, who she never met, has died. Not only does he leave her a family she never knew about; but he’s included her in his will.
My Not So Wicked Step Brother by Jennifer Peel
This was an easy and cute read. It’s also the first book in a three book series. The perfect chick-lit. I read this book in 24 hours because my second Covid shot made me feel like poo. All I could manage to do was read or sleep. I connected with the main character over our mutual love/addiction to Dr Pepper.
Emma Loveless is convinced her last name has ruined her chance of finding true love. When she finally meets the man of her dreams, she thinks her luck has changed. They spend hours talking on the phone, set up their first date and then all their romantic plans come to a screeching halt when Emma’s mom dies unexpectedly.
My Not So Wicked Ex-Fiancé by Jennifer Peel
Shelby Duchane is a southern girl who has lived a charmed life. She was raised believing money bought happiness, but then Ryder Prescott showed up and her beliefs changed. It’s too bad Ryder broke her heart. Now Shelby finds herself in Colorado trying to get over her broken heart. She’s doing everything she can to forget the man she was supposed to marry when he shows up in her new world. Can she get over him? Does she want to? Did he really do the wicked things she was made to believe?
This is the second book of Jennifer Peel’s three book series. It’s a fast and fun chick-lit read.
